Isn't immersion in current 3D games enough for you? Did the Kinect disappoint you? Aren't the sensations strong enough? No problem, Novint are working on some pretty spectacular hardware to plunge you into the heart of the action.

A laptop on your back, a jacket to simulate impact, Track IR, 3D glasses, assault rifle, dagger and grenade, as a virtual soldier you have access to plenty of virtual reality hardware.

And if that isn't enough, a motion control robotic arm is soon to be added to the range of potential get-up. Known as the XIO, it detects the player's arm movements and movements in the game, so that the user is able to feel what's happening.

While we can easily see why the army might be interested in this sort of system, what it adds in pure gaming terms is more questionable.

Nevertheless, making the player actually sense what's happening in the game is real progress. The XIO is only at prototype stage right now and we'll certainly be following how this new gaming tool shapes up and will give a more definite opinion in due course.
