The release of Starcraft II may have been grabbing the headlines, but another cult game is due for release in a revamped version this summer. Worms Reloaded will be launching on 26 August on the Steam online gaming platform.
When looking back, all dewy-eyed with nostalgia, at the games that shaped our misspent youth, names like Mario Bros, Final Fantasy, Duke Nukem (or Civilisation for a certain Mr Vincent Alzieu) spring to mind straight away. However, Worms, another PC classic originally released in 1995, is often overlooked.
For those of you have never played one of the fifty-or-so versions of this game (including editions for all hardware platforms), the basic concept is simple. You're in control of a team of earthworms, ready to confront a rival team of earthworms. To help you fight your way to victory, there's an impressive arsenal of weapons at your disposal, with everything from traditional bazookas and baseball bats, to more unusual arms such as the banana bomb, the infamous concrete donkey, the napalm strike and more. The aim of the game is to be the last team with at least one Worm still standing.
Team 17, the game's developer, has included a solo campaign with 35 missions, plus an extra 30 missions in the Warzone Campaign, aimed at advanced players. There are several tutorials and a special Bodycount mode where the aim is to stay alive for as long as possible when faced with infinite waves of enemies.
As well as single-player action, Worms Reloaded also has a great multi-player mode. You can play against up to four opponents either online or via a local network connection for even more madcap action.
There's a good choice of custom options for your team (tombstone, shout, victory dance etc.), and an integrated map editor allows you to play in your own wacky worlds and share your creations with other players.
Team 17 is particularly proud to announce that on top of the original 47 weapons inherited from previous versions of the game, Worms Reloaded also includes 17 brand new arms.
