Final analysis
To finish, here are two summaries of the different systems tested. They are performance indexes based on performances obtained by machines with 2 GB of RAM.

If you've been following, you won't be surprised to see that adding RAM to a computer using Windows 7 doesn't improve the peformance of your software.

At the most you gain 3% by moving up from 2 to 4 GB on an entry-level machine and 4% between 2 and 6 GB on a faster PC.

Also, though there are few differences to note between 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows at 4 GB, we do recommend you go for the 64-bit version if you have 4 GB or more of RAM.

Here are the results that we obtained on our entry-level machine, then on our high-end machine.

Entry-level machine (Core 2 Duo) - Windows 7 Ultimate
General index: high is good
An index of 100 is given to a machine with 2 GB of RAM

High-level machine (Core i7) - Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit
General index: high is good
An index of 100 is given to a machine with 2 GB of RAM
