The test
In version 3.90, WinRAR is available in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. We use the 32-bit on the entry level PC and the 64-bit version on the high-end machine.

Our test compresses a varied collection of Word, Excel and JPG files and files from email software. The final file is an RAR using highest compression settings.

Here are our readings with WinRAR 3.90 on our entry level PC (32-bit version) and our high-end PC (64-bit version). As the results are given in seconds, low is best.

The results are fairly close but note that Windows 7 is slightly down on the other two, taking an extra 3 seconds to compress our files.

The differences are larger on the high end machine and Seven is a good deal behind the other two. Windows XP is at the head of the pack.
