Airline SAS is due to start offering Wi-Fi and GSM connectivity on its flights using technology specially developed for the Scandinavian carrier.

With mobile-phone-free places becoming more and more rare, it now seems that one of the last safe-havens—the aeroplane—could be under threat. Airline SAS has announced it'll be offering Wi-Fi (using SASWi-Fi technology) connectivity to passengers on board its flights as from this month. GSM network coverage for mobile phones is due to follow in summer 2012.

This service will initially be offered free of charge, and will first of all be coming to the firm's Boeing 737-800 aircraft for internal flights in Norway, as well as flights between Oslo, Paris, Frankfurt and Stockholm.

In 2012, GSM network coverage will allow passengers to send and receive SMS and MMS, to make and receive calls, and to sync data via GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) on a smartphone. All of this is no doubt great news for business travellers, but won't be so great for anyone trying to catch up on a few hours' kip!
