Solid state hard drives are set to be a new battleground in the IT world, and Western Digital wasn't going to stay out of the fray for long: it's just announced news of a new range of drives called SiliconEdge Blue.

They will be available in three different sizes: 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB, at respective prices of £250, £250 and … £800!  It's clear that 2010 isn't going to be the year that SSD becomes widespread amongst regular consumers …

Technically speaking, the new drives will use the SATA 3 interface, which is back-compatible with SATA 2, have NAND MLC chips and work with TRIM command on Windows 7.  Hardware like that should allow them to reach sequential read speeds of 250 MB/s and write speeds of 170 MB/s.
