Webcam Companion 3

The MultiCover Widescreen HD webcam comes with a CD including the Webcam Companion 3 software package. It has the usual host of functions for taking photos and recording videos, but it also has a very interesting remote surveillance function.

The software is easy to use, and so is the surveillance mode. Just click on Start Surveillance, then the webcam will automatically begin filming as soon as it detects movement. It can then automatically puts itself back on standby as soon as movement stops, only to start up again as soon as a person or moving object enters its detection field.

Trust is a manufacturer that makes a whole load of different peripherals, often with budget price tags. The MultiCover Widescreen HD Webcam is a sleek little model that can film in 720 p HD.

Trust seems to have understood that as well as the tech specs, a product's design can be a very important factor when choosing a peripheral. To make sure this webcam pleases as many users as possible, Trust even supplies two different coloured casings. So if this bronze-brown shade doesn't float your boat, you can replace it with black or white.

Stand & Attachment: easy to position

The MultiCover Widescreen HD stand is very practical indeed. In fact, it's quite similar to the stand used in the Microsoft VX5500, and allows you to place it on a desk or attach it to a laptop or computer monitor.

Another good feature is the cable-guide built into the stand, which makes way for the USB cable to pass through the middle of webcam's base. The cable therefore doesn't affect the camera's stability.

Image Quality: a light speckling of noise

At first glance, image quality with the MultiCover Widescreen HD webcam looks perfectly satisfactory.

However, if you look a little closer you'll notice a slight speckling of noise.

It also suffers from many of the problems typically found in webcams, such as overexposing whites on darker backgrounds and losing detail in low light.

Audio Quality: muffled sound

Like many webcams, the Multicover doesn't capture and reproduce sound particularly accurately. Everything sounds a bit muffled.
