Here Logitech is marketing a very high end webcam. On paper, the spec is mouthwatering. The C910 has a Carl Zeiss sensor with 1920 x 1080 pixel definition (Full HD) protected by a glass plate, two microphones, situated on either side of the webcam and automatic focus. In spite of its weight (138 grammes), its base and the anti-slip surface mean it's easy to fix to any type of surface (desk, cathode ray screen, laptop screen and flat screen).

Image in daylight at 720p (maximum definition for instant messaging)
We took a reading of 48 frames per second using the software that comes with the webcam. This did however drop slightly in Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) to 15 frames per second, which is nevertheless sufficient in a well-lit room.

Image at night: automatic settings on the left and manual settings on the right
In the evening with just a desk lamp turned on, the C910 doesn't do as well. In spite of a slight dip in responsiveness, the image is still fluid enough for a video conversation. What's more, the image really isn't too noisy. If the image does seem a little dark however, all you need to do is use the manual settings to increase the gain and lower exposure slightly so as to have a brighter image, with a slight loss in speed.
Logitech supplies a full software suite with its C910 webcam. The programme called 'WebCam Software' serves as gangway for the rest of the suite. You can take photos and record video no problem. Those who like to play around with the images they're sending will appreciate the fact that, like all the higher end Logitech webcams, the C910 comes with the 'Video Effects' tool which includes numerous avatars and accessories for the face, which adapt themselves to your movements and expressions.
The software suite also allows you to give your house a surveillance facility: useful if anyone breaks in in your absence or the kids are watching telly instead of doing their homework! However, the software won't alert you by mail as some of the competition equipment does.
Is a high definition image really necessary?
For the last few years, webcam manufacturers have been fighting it out to give ever higher definition. As you can see with the C910, Logitech is now marketing a FULL HD camera. Both Live Messenger and Skype are however limited to a maximum of 720p for video conversation. What's more, the video flow is also compressed to avoid too much jumpiness due to internet bandwidth limitations, which results in a considerable loss in quality. At the end of the day, you won't be using even half the capacity of such a webcam. The only way to get the most out of such a peripheral is to use the video creation software that comes with it (not the case with many users).Image quality
The image quality on the C910 is excellent. In a well-lit room, the image displayed is well detailed and the colours are accurate. Moreover, at 720p, fluidity is good.
