The very popular video player, VLC, will soon have its own editing suite: VLMC.Presented on the 18th December at the IT university, Epitech, in Paris, VLMC is a piece of open source software designed for video editing. With all the VLC player codecs, VLMC (VideoLAN Movie Creator) will support all video cameras and almost all video formats currently on the market, in particular HD formats such as Mpeg-4, DivX, MP4, AVCHD and HDV.
Conceived at the beginning of 2009, VLMC is the brainchild of a team of 6 Epitech students. The idea was to develop some editing software derived from VLC, which is reputed for its rapidity and compatibility with all video codecs.
VLMC offers a sober interface but with all the main editing features: a bin, a timeline, up to 64 video and audio tracks, titles, double or single screen display (one for the source and the other for editing), mirroring pro editing tools. 2D/3D effects and transitions will also be available as downloadable plug-ins. VLMC could even eventually import and edit video from Youtube, Vimeo and so on, which promises some interesting adaptations…
Here’s the VLMC interface:

VLMC will be available for download from the site VideoLAN as of February 2010 for PC and Linux platforms. Installation (4 MB) will require the user to install the VLC player beforehand. A pack will also be available. Given the popularity of VLC (80 million users worldwide), this new piece of software will no doubt interest millions, in particular bloggers.
