While some in the past have announced IBM's death, the quiet force of the computing world continues to plough its own furrow without furore.

After carrying the firm to the heights in terms of provision of services, Samuel Palmisano, now over sixty years old, has handed the baton to Virginia Rometty, previously senior vice president and group executive for sales, marketing and strategy.

Palmisano, who transformed the company from computer manufacturer into IT services specialist - he supervised the sale of the PC division and its famous Thinkpad to Lenovo - says, 'With every leadership role, she (Rometty) has strengthened our ability to integrate IBM's capabilities with clients' and that he considers her the ideal CEO to take IBM into its second century.

Rometty then, should allow the company to remain one of the major players in the computer age to come and continue to move forward in its quiet way. Remember that while IBM is worth slightly less than Microsoft and is far behind Apple, in 2010 its turnover was one and a half times that of Apple's for more or less equivalent profits.
