ViewSonic's next 3D monitor to use LEDs

The very exclusive club of 120 Hz monitors is about to gain a fourth member, the ViewSonic V3D241wm-LED.

Up until now, the number of 3D monitors available for computers was just three.  The first to hit the market was the Samsung 2233rz, a 1680 x 1050 pixel 22'' display.  Then ViewSonic launched its own 22'' 120 Hz screen, the VX2268wm, which had very similar specs to Samsung's first attempt.  More recently, Acer joined in with a 1920 x 1080 pixel 24'' monitor, the GD245HQ, which was more impressive than the first two options.

This will be ViewSonic's second 120 Hz monitor, and this time it will be 24''--or 23.6'', to be precise.  Its main distinguishing feature is its use of LED backlighting, a technology that should produce a more even spread of light across the whole surface of the screen, as well as notably reducing energy consumption.  It will have VGA, DVI and HDMI connectors.

We know that the V3D241wm-LED won't be in the shops before the second quarter of 2010, but we don't yet know how much it will cost once it gets there.

If this is the first time you've heard about 3D monitors, then you should know they use a higher refresh rater than traditional displays, and are compatible with Nvidia's 3D technology, which allows you to enjoy your favourite games in three dimensions.

We're pleased to see how the market for 120 Hz monitors is developing as new models are released.  We've gone from a 22'' with a single DVI input to a Full HD 24'' display with LED backlighting in the space of just four models.  At this rate, we might see the first 120 Hz displays with non-TN panels that some people see as the next step in the 3D adventure before the year's out.
