Video encoding: x264 1080p with HandBrake

The test

We use the HandBrake graphics interface to carry out encoding with the free video codec x264. The same 32-bit version is used on both computers.

The test consists in encoding a video taken from a Blu-ray in x264 (MPEG-4 AVC). The resolution is 1080p with encoding in two passes and an average speed of 1800 Kbps.

This video compression is still pretty heavy for a computer. Here are the results obtained on our entry-level PC and then our high-end machine. As the results are given in seconds, low is best.

Some big differences here. The worst performer is Vista, at 20 seconds longer than XP. Seven is closer to XP but still doesn’t manage to outdo it.

Things are different on the high-end configuration, with the differences between the different systems very small.
