The Executive Metal certainly doesn't err on the side of giving you superfluous extras. It has been designed for those looking for a solid storage device, with no fluff or artifice. No software, no strap, no encryption... just storage!

'Metal, 16 GB, 25 MB/sec', is what the wording says on the packaging of the new USB 2.0 Store'n Go Executive Metal Verbatim key, a pretty good summary of its spec, all things said and done. You could translate this as 'solid, high capacity, rapid storage'. This is, in any case, what Verbatim is promising.

Once you get it out the box the Executive metal does indeed seem solid but the metallic finish does weight quite a bit: at 34g it is three times the weight of your average USB key. It is the usual size however (5.9 x 2.3 x 1.1 cm) and its retractable connector means no end protection is required.
Storage capacity varies on the different models offered: 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB. We tested the 16 GB.

Solidity, good... Capacity, good... Now let's check its performance. 25 MB/s is a long way behind what you get with the new USB 3.0 keys but at least this figure doesn't overestmate what you get out of the Executive Metal. Our test with CrystalDisk Mark scored it very close to this figure:

Our practical tests bore this out too:

These results place it on the good side of average: read performances are honest, while the writes are among the best out there for a USB 2.0 key.

A good key!
