Over the period from February to May 2011, Samsung was still the leader in sales of smartphones on the other side of the Atlantic and Android is still incontestably the most commonly used operating system, this according to ComScore among others.

Samsung, then, is still leading sales of smartphones in the United States. With the success of the Galaxy S II (3 million units sold in 55 days), the company could well now increase its advantage over the competition.

The ComScore report also reveals that Apple has supplanted RIM in second place with a market share of 8.7% against 8.1% for the creator of the BlackBerry.

RIM is has also lost ground on the OS market, losing 4.2 percentage points and again being supplanted by Apple as no. 2. iOS, the system the Apple iPhones run on, now has 26.6% of the OS market share. Android, top of the pile with 38% and showing no signs of weakening, runs on multiple handsets across multiple brands.

Microsoft's system, Windows Phone 7, a major update to which is expected this autumn, has lost a little ground (5.8%).

The arrival of the update on Nokia's forthcoming handsets should give it a bigger share on what is a market that, while in flux, has its well-ensconced favourites.
