We caught a glimpse of Sony's upcoming TV range on the manufacturer's stand at CES 2012. The first interesting thing about the 2012 range is that there'll be much fewer models on offer. The second thing to note is that all of Sony's 2012 TVs will use LED backlighting, with one Full LED model (LEDs covering the whole rear of the screen) and four Edge LED models (LEDs around the edges of the screen only).

The Full LED model is actually the only one of Sony's 2012 TVs that hasn't been updated, as it's none other than the good old HX920 (HX923 in the UK). This TV is still very much up-to-date, however, with a contrast ratio of 3700:1, a perfectly calibrated picture (in Custom mode), consistent screen quality worthy of a plasma TV and very wide viewing angles.

The four upcoming Edge LED models are the HX850 (due to replace the HX820 and NX720/NX723), the HX750 (to replace the HX720/HX723 and EX720/EX723), the EX650 (to replace the EX521/EX523) and the EX550 (to replace the EX320).

Sony's TVs using CCFL tube backlighting will be progressively phased out and replaced with LED models over the course of the year. Some 2011 models, like the CX520, will still be on sale during the first half of 2012, but should start disappearing sometime after the summer.
