Sharp has officially announced a new range of high-end TVs to be sold in Japan, dubbed the XL9 Series. It consists of five models ranging from 46" to 80" and merges all the brand's latest technologies:
  • Quattron, which adds yellow subpixels into the mix with the standard red, blue and green
  • Moth Eye, an irregular panel surface designed to ensure maximum contrast and zero glare!

The engineers say they actually got the idea from the way moths' eyes are shaped.

AV Watch has published a photo comparing different panels, with the Moth Eye in the middle:

The difference between the glossy screen on the left, the matte screen on the right and the Moth Eye in the middle is pretty clear to see. However, as far as we can tell, in this picture the centre image appears to have a bit less contrast than the one on the left. Sharp assured us that this is not the case, that they've measured their Moth Eye panels to have just as much contrast as the glossy ones, yada yada yada...

Here's another example of a Moth Eye panel (left) and a glossy screen (right):

Five TVs are to be released in Japan:
  • a 46" for approximately £2,200
  • a 52" for £2,500
  • a 60" for £3,000
  • a 70" for £5,500
  • a 80" for £7,800

How many of these will make it to this side of Eurasia remains to be seen. If Sharp releases the XL9 Series in Europe at all, it won't be until 2013 and it won't be all five models. The company has informed us that despite the technological innovations, apparently the European market just isn't ready for prices of this magnitude.

Let's make this interesting: I say the 60" will have the most bang for your buck, taking into account diagonal size, technology and asking price. Who wants to bet on a 60" Moth Eye in Europe by late 2013?
