Everything we said in the Samsung UE40ES6300 review holds true for this model—the only thing that's different is the screen size!

Sometimes manufacturers fit the different sized models of a given television with panels from different sources. In such cases, our comments are only valid for a specific size of a given TV, fitted with the panel that we originally tested. Contrast, black levels, colour fidelity and ghosting are all subject to change from one panel to another. When different panels are used, we'll be sure to let you know about it!

Manufacturers who do use the same panel in all the various sized TVs sold under a given model number can expect the same results across the whole range. The only factor that could be prone to slight variation is the brightness, producing a slightly different contrast. However, according to our own tests, and assurances from manufacturers, the results of one TV can accurately be applied to other sized models in the series when the same panel is used.
Our Recommended Settings

After trying and testing the various options in the internal menu, for watching films, we found the best settings were "Movie" mode with colour temperature set to "Warm 1". Users looking for super-smooth images should set Motion Plus to "Standard", which minimises judder without affecting image quality.

For low-resolution sources (DVD, SD TV, etc.), you're better off leaving upscaling to a latest-generation console (PS3, XBOX 360, etc.). If you don't have a console, try upping the sharpness setting to artificially increase image definition.

Our Readings (with the above settings):

Contrast: 2260:1
Black: 0.09 cd/m²
Gamma : 4.7 / 5
Delta E: 4.7
Average discrepancy across display: 8%
Viewing angles: 1.7 / 5
Power use: 120 W
Media player: 3.8 / 5

PROS

  • Good 3D picture quality
  • Effective motion interpolation
  • Relatively low power use: 120 watts
  • Very little clouding on the model we tested
  • Media player supports plenty of file formats

CONS

  • Glossy screen prone to reflections and glare
  • Tight viewing angles
  • Colour fidelity could be better: average Delta E 4.7
  • Contrast is a little on the low side for watching TV in a dark room (2260:1)

CONCLUSION 3/5

The Samsung ES6300 does a great job in 3D mode with practically no crosstalk (images for the left and right eyes overlapping). There's still room for improvement, though, with colour fidelity that could be better (average Delta E 4.7) and contrast that may prove a little on the low side for watching TV with the lights off (2260:1).
