This TV is the 40'' version of the 55'' Samsung UE55ES8000 that we tested in our labs. For more information about the ES800, please refer to our review of the Samsung UE55ES8000.

Everything we said in the UE55ES8000 review holds true for this model—the only thing that's different is the screen size!

Sometimes manufacturers fit the different sizes of a given television with panels taken from different sources. In these cases, our comments apply only to the size in question, as it's fitted with the same panel that we originally tested. Contrast, black levels, colour fidelity and ghosting are all subject to change from one panel to another. When different panels are used, we'll be sure to let you know!

However, other times manufacturers use the same panel in each size of a given model number. In these cases, you can expect the same results across the whole range. The only factor that could be prone to variation is the brightness, producing slightly different contrast. However, according to our own tests and assurances from manufacturers, when the same panel is used the results of one TV can accurately be applied to the other sizes in the series.
Our Readings
Contrast: 1960:1
Black level: 0.11 cd/m²
Gamma: 4.6 / 5
Delta E: 3.1
Average discrepancy across display: 10%
Viewing angles: 1.2 / 5
Power use: 107 W
Media player: 3.8 / 5

We take these readings using the best settings for watching a movie. Cinema mode is generally the one we use. Wherever possible, we set the white levels at 200 cd/m².

  • Accurate colours: average delta E of 3.1
  • Effective motion interpolation function
  • Remote with built-in touchpad is particularly practical
  • Low power use: 107 watts

  • Glossy screen: reflections are a problem
  • Tight viewing angles
  • More 3D crosstalk than in the D8000
  • Disappointing contrast: 1960:1
  • The model we tested was prone to clouding

The Samsung ES8000 is ahead of its time. While there's still room for improvement in the motion and voice control systems, it's the first TV out there to integrate this kind of function. And, on the whole, they work reasonably well. Image quality, on the other hand, seems to have taken a step backwards, with a lower contrast level (1960:1) than the D8000, tighter viewing angles, screen brightness that's less consistent across the display and stronger 3D crosstalk. All in all, the ES8000 just managed to scrape its way to a four-star review!
