As each year goes by, plasma technology is slowly losing ground in the TV market. However, plasma technology isn't dead yet! In fact, Samsung has presented a high-end 64" model, the PS64E8000.
You'll need a pretty big living room to get this 64" beast in at all, let alone make sure you can sit far enough back from the screen to see what's going on!
The PS64E8000 has the same basic functions as Samsung's ES7000 and ES8000 LCD TVs. For example, there's a built-in webcam for use with the voice and motion controls we checked out in the ES8000. This system isn't perfect yet, however. It''l no doubt improve in future product generations.
This TV has an active-shutter 3D mode and comes with two pairs of 3D glasses (non-rechargeable). It has Wi-Fi and an Ethernet port (RJ45) for access to Samsung's Smart TV services (YouTube, VOD, web browser, etc.). There's no word on the motion interpolation system, but, like most plasma-screen TVs, the screen refresh rate is listed as 600 Hz (50 frames per second split into 12 sub-images: 50 x 12 = 600 Hz).
Like the ES8000, this TV comes with two remotes—a regular remote with backlit buttons and a second remote that's part plastic, part metal. This minimalist controller has just 13 buttons, and the plastic section features a touchpad for navigating around the TV's interface and selecting options. It's certainly practical, but it can take some getting used to.
