According to DisplaySearch, LG's 55" W-OLED screen panels with white, red, green and blue diodes are eight times more expensive to produce than equivalent-sized LCD panels. Samsung's OLED panels are reported to be 10 times more expensive to make!

In spite of these currently high manufacturing prices, OLED technology seems to have a bright future ahead of it, with experts predicting the market to grow tenfold by 2016.

DisplaySearch reports that the smaller 4" OLED screens found in smartphones are only 1.3 times more expensive to make than LCD equivalents, which goes to show that production costs for larger formats are likely to come down over time.

Finally, DisplaySearch claims that recent technological advances have allowed OLED manufacturers to push pixel density up to 250 pixels per inch (ppi), with 280 ppi now within reach. This effectively paves the way for Quad HD/4K OLED televisions.
