This model is the 47'' version of the 42'' TV that we tested in our lab, the Philips 42PFL4606H.

It has an IPS display with a matte finish and CCFL backlighting using fluorescent tubes.  It has a built-in media player, but it's hardly the most impressive we've ever seen and doesn't support many video formats.

In the lab, the display turned out to suffer from more ghosting than most TVs, with an average ghosting time of 19.5 ms; this value is below 10 ms on the best TVs.  The colour reproduction helped improve things a bit, reaching a deltaE of 3.2 in 'Photo' mode.  The gamma is under control, but the model we tested suffered from some light clouding.  A contrast ratio of 940:1 is disappointing when we know other TVs reach 5000:1.  It's an unfortunately common problem with IPS technology which does, however, have the advantage of producing wider viewing angles than TVs with PVA and MVA displays.

The PFL4606H's speakers are pretty disappointing and lack in both power and bass, although the mid-range and treble are satisfactory.

Energy consumption is kept under control at 125 W for the 47'' version.

Everything we said in the original article holds true--the only thing that's different is the size!

The only exception is that some manufacturers fit different sized televisions with panels from different sources.  In that case, our comments are only valid for the panel that we originally tested.  Contrast, black levels, colour handling and ghosting are all subject to change from one panel to another.

Manufacturers who do fit the same panel in all of the TVs in a range can expect the same results across the whole range.  The only factor which could be prone to slight variation is the brightness, producing slightly different contrast.  According to our own tests, and assurances from manufacturers, the results of one TV can accurately be applied to others in the range.
