The Philips PFL468606H is the 46 version of the Philips 40PFL8606H TV that we tested.

It has an ASV display manufactured by Sharp which is backlit using LEDs around the outside and covered by a pane of glass that's been treated with an anti-glare coating.  Extra services are available online, via DLNA or from the built-in media player which can handle most video codecs.

In the lab, that ASV display proved to be very fast indeed with a ghosting time of just 9 ms making it one of the best TVs on that score alone.  Colours are nicely balanced with an average deltaE of 9.1, the gamma is almost perfect and it has an excellent contrast ratio of 3200:1.  And unlike most Edge LED TVs, it doesn't suffer from any clouding.

The PFL8606H sounds great thanks to the speakers built into the stand;

As is often the case for Edge LED TVs, the efficient backlighting system means that energy consumption is minimal.

Everything else we said in the original article holds true—the only thing that's different is the size!

The only exception is that some manufacturers fit different sized televisions with panels from different sources.  In that case, our comments are only valid for the panel that we originally tested.  Contrast, black levels, colour handling and ghosting are all subject to change from one panel to another.

Manufacturers who do fit the same panel in all of the TVs in a range can expect the same results across the whole range.  The only factor which could be prone to slight variation is the brightness, producing slightly different contrast.  According to our own tests, and assurances from manufacturers, the results of one TV can accurately be applied to others in the range.

-

No 3D glasses supplied

Philips is definitely on a roll this year with its TVs! The PFL8606H produces a great picture in two dimensions as well as three. Not happy with being one of the most responsive we've seen, producing sky-high contrast ratios and getting colours spot on, its display is also exempt from problems with clouding. It's hard to do better than that!
