After LCD and plasma TVs, Panasonic is now apparently set to branch out into OLED technology with an 8.5 generation OLED screen production facility currently under development and due to be operational from 2012.

According to Japanese website Nikkan, Panasonic is currently setting up an OLED TV production line at one of its LCD screen factories in Himeji, Japan. This is expected to be operational as from 2012.

The panels in question are said to be 8.5 generation screens measuring 220 x 250 cm. Obviously, they won't pop off the production line already built into the firm's TV sets—Panasonic will instead have to cut the panels down to 40" (102 cm) and other popular screen sizes before loading them into its TVs.

Panasonic is a little late in joining the OLED market compared with certain other manufacturers. LG and Samsung, for example, are both gearing up to present 55-inch OLED TVs at the CES 2012 tech show in January. These models are expected to go on sale in July 2012.
