Kindle DXWith the IFA consumer technology show set to open its doors at the end of the week, rumour has it that Sony is gearing up to present an 84" Ultra High Definition (UHD) TV.

Like the LG 84LM960V, Sony's upcoming TV will have Quad HD resolution, which is four times Full HD. More precisely, Sony's model will apparently boast a resolution of 4096 x 3072 pixels, compared with 3840 x 2160 pixels for LG's model.

There's no news yet about 3D compatibility, but word on the web is that Sony has opted for Edge LED backlighting. In other words, LEDs are placed around the edges of the LCD panel, which should help keep the TV nice and slim. We would have preferred to see Full LED (also known as Direct LED) backlighting, however, with diodes covering the whole screen panel, as this system distributes light more effectively and generally makes for deeper blacks.

The 84" 4K TV's launch price is rumoured to be $30,000—that's $10,000 more than the LG 84LM960V, which is due for release next month.

We should find out more about this rumoured TV when the IFA kicks off later this week—stay tuned.
