Conclusion
With a PVA panel, the Samsung 40C630 did very well, and should have scored our maximum rating of five stars. However, because of the panel lottery that affects this model, the 40C630 only comes away with four stars, the rating we gave a member of this range with an MVA panel from AU Optronics.
Panasonic has made huge progress with its IPS-Alpha LCD screen technology. The DT50 is as responsive as a plasma TV—so much so that 3D image quality is excellent. However, the contrast is too low (830:1) and colour fidelity could still be better. The DT50 therefore misses out on a fourth star.
The Samsung ES8000 is ahead of its time. While there's still room for improvement in the motion and voice control systems, it's the first TV out there to integrate this kind of function. And, on the whole, they work reasonably well. Image quality, on the other hand, seems to have taken a step backwards, with a lower contrast level (1960:1) than the D8000, tighter viewing angles, screen brightness that's less consistent across the display and stronger 3D crosstalk. All in all, the ES8000 just managed to scrape its way to a four-star review!
