Like Samsung, LG will be loading some of its new TVs with a voice and motion control system. We headed over to the LG stand at CES 2012 to check it out.

To be honest, LG's system didn't work very well! The few voice commands we tried out were long, laborious and ended up being translated approximatively or just didn't work at all. In other words, our first impression of the system on LG's stand wasn't so great—it's the kind of thing you'll play with for a few seconds and then abandon until a clearly necessary update makes the function genuinely useful.

That said, in LG's defence, even when speaking right into the directional microphone (the mic. is built into the new remote control), there was a heck of a lot of background noise to contend with! The noisy CES environment clearly didn't do the system any favours, and it'll be interesting to see whether it works better in a quieter setting.

Unfortunately, the motion control system didn't work any better, but LG was quick to admit that this is still under development. Creating a system that lets you switch channels, confirm choices and change the volume with the movement of your hands is clearly no mean feat!

Result: 1 - 0 to Samsung for the time being.
