It looks like the rumours were true: LG will have a Google TV after all, the new PM6900. Android apps look set to make the leap from your smartphone to the small screen!
The TV will actually have a sort of 'dual boot' system, allowing users the chance to switch between LG's proprietary OS and Google TV, depending on which apps they want to use. Google TV is an extra layer on top of Android that has been reworked to look good on a Full HD display. All of the usual smartphone and tablet apps will work, but hopefully developers won't take too long to work out how to make them look good at 1920 x 1080 pixels.
It's certainly some pretty exciting news. Sony got its fingers burnt when it tried the same thing with a Google TV in the US last year, because TV channels there didn't like connected services that competed with their own. That's probably why LG isn't making too much of a fuss about its own Google TV. We say that for two reasons.
Firstly: LG isn't pretending the PM6900 isn't a Google TV, but is putting the emphasis firmly on its own PenTouch features, which give users the chance to use a special pen to interact with the touchscreen display. Apparently the arrival of an entirely new operating system on a television isn't big enough news in its own right. Look at the label below, which identifies the new PM6900 as a 'Pentouch TV' not a Google TV:
Secondly, there isn't even anybody from the firm willing to show it off, just a demo video that keeps on looping around.
