Like Samsung, LG is due to present a 55-inch OLED TV at the CES 2012 technology show, held in Las Vegas from 10 to 13 January 2012. Visuals of the product are already doing the rounds on the web.
While Samsung will be using red, green and blue organic light emitting diodes in its model, LG is instead using white diodes with coloured filters (red, blue, green) in front of each one.
Word is that the LG OLED TV will only be 5 mm thick. Plus, LG is announcing an 'ultra definition' screen, although it's not yet clear exactly what that means. It could, however, make this the first 55-inch OLED 55 TV to come with a Quad HD display panel (3840 x 2160 pixels)—we've got our fingers crossed in any case!
LG is also promising almost instant response times and no input lag, not to mention viewing angles wider than those of LCD TVs and an ultra-high native contrast ratio of 100,000:1.
Although it looks like 2012 will be the year in which OLED TVs finally start to make it onto the market, production capacities will still be very limited. We reckon you'll have to wait until 2014 to see this technology really take over the high street.
