How can you be sure to pick the best TV when there are so many models to choose from? You'll find all of our TV reviews in this section of the site, and you can use the search tool below to find just what you're looking for. If that sounds too much like hard work, why not have a look at our pick of the best TVs currently on the market?

Why are there so many models?

There's a very simple answer to this question: TVs that measure around 40'' represent the middle ground between affordable entry-level screens and more expensive high-end options. The cheapest TVs, which start at around 26'', often have versions in larger sizes up to around 40'' or 42''. Equally, the best 37'' TVs can go all the way up to 52''. As a result, TVs measuring forty or so inches—whether that's 40'', 42'', 46'' or 47"—represent a major battleground for manufacturers, and that's why they offer so many different options.

You'll find all of the most interesting recent models here, but once you've got your TV, don't forget to set it up properly. Many TVs come with a Cinema mode, which often reproduces colours accurately enough for you to start enjoying the Home Cinema experience ... all you need to do is worry about the popcorn!

Panasonic Viera TX-P42ST50B award

Panasonic Viera TX-P42ST50B

The Panasonic Viera ST50 really has nothing to envy of the higher-end VT50. In fact, image quality is just as good in this model. We therefore don't see much point in shelling out for the pricier model, as the ST50 won't disappoint home cinema buffs. This TV is available with a 42", 50", 55" or 65" screen.

Best of the rest

Experts and Pros: Excellent LCD

Sony Bravia KDL-46HX853 award

Sony Bravia KDL-46HX853
The Sony Bravia HX853 delivers excellent picture quality in 2D and 3D, with high contrast, accurate colours, a near-perfect gamma and great responsiveness. It's a must-have LCD TV. However, as sleek as the stand might look, it's no match for a home cinema speaker kit or a stand-alone soundbar.

Alternative 3D LCD TV

Samsung UE46ES7000 award

Samsung UE46ES7000
The Samsung ES7000 is a good TV with all the latest technology. It has 3D support, Smart TV services and uses an effective motion compensation system to keep fast action flowing smoothly. It also features voice and motion controls, which some users may like (we can't help thinking they're a bit of a gimmick).

Budget LCD

Samsung UE40ES5500

Samsung UE40ES5500
It may not have the best picture out there, but the Samsung UE40ES5500 should be good for anyone looking for a TV in this price range. Plus, the model we tested showed no signs of clouding (bright patches in dark areas of the screen). That gets a big thumbs up from us.

Two alternatives

Good 40" 3D LED Option

Samsung UE40ES6710 award

Samsung UE40ES6710
The Samsung ES6710 has all the advantages of the ES6300 while also correcting its major fault. It therefore displays accurate onscreen colours, as well as offering near-perfect 3D viewing and high contrast. Picky home movie buffs who like to watch films in pitch-darkness may still prefer the ES7000 for its deeper blacks.

Passive 3D TV

LG 42LM615T

LG 42LM615T
The LG LM615T is an excellent TV ... for well-lit rooms. The black level just isn't deep enough for lights-out cinema-style viewing. That's all the more of a shame since the out-of-the-box picture settings are excellent and 3D image quality is first rate.[
