Toshiba has just launched its 14-inch USB Mobile LCD Monitor in the US. This portable monitor hooks up to laptop computers via a USB connection and is designed for use on the move.

With this 14-inch display (1366 x 768 pixels), you can work with two screens even when you're not in the office. Plus, it doesn't require any extra power cables or video cables—just plug it into your computer's USB port and it gets up and running straight away. What's more, its compact size (340.5 x 239.5 x 15.5 mm) and lightweight design (780 g or 1.3 Kg with its protective case) mean you can easily slide it into your laptop case or briefcase.

Note that when you plug in this USB monitor, your laptop's processor will have to work harder, although there's no extra work for the graphics card. In other words, if your laptop isn't the most powerful in the pack then this Mobile LCD Monitor may not be the ideal solution for you.

Toshiba's tech specs give a contrast ratio of 400:1 and a response time of 16 ms. What's more, its only connection is a USB port. That's nothing amazing, but it'll be perfectly fine for word processing or surfing the web. It has a basic selection of controls, with two buttons for adjusting the screen's brightness and for switching it on and off.
Although it may not have loads of fancy features, this portable monitor is still an ingenious idea that's sure to come in handy for anyone who often works out and about.

It's compatible with any laptop computer (not just Toshiba models) that has a USB port and runs on Windows XP, Vista or Seven.

The Toshiba Mobile LCD Monitor is currently only available in the US for $200, but we're hoping it'll make its way across the Atlantic soon.
