TomTom launched the original Start sat-nav in 2009 to better position the brand in the entry-level market. It was a basic, easy-to-use GPS unit that was affordable but still comprehensive. Now, six months later, the brand has released an updated version known as the Start².
Although the original Start was pretty similar to the TomTom One, it did lack features such as lane guidance and RDS-TMC traffic info. All this has been put right, it appears, with the Start², which now resembles the brand’s One sat-nav system even more closely.
In fact, apart from its design, the TomTom Start² doesn’t appear to be any different to the TomTom One. The Start² is a tad larger but 5 mm slimmer and its battery life is advertised as two hours rather than three hours for the One. The main advantage of the Start², then, is its (very) slightly more moderate price tag, with the Start² Europe costing a whole £10 less than the One Europe (One Europe RRP: £149.99 vs Start² Europe RRP: £139.99 ).
As an entry-level GPS, the Start² is easy to use but also has plenty of good features, including IQ Routes technology, Text-to-Speech, fixed speed camera warnings, Map Share technology, and RDS-TMC available as an optional extra. You can even customise this new PND with TomTom’s interchangeable StartSkins, although the units themselves are only available to buy in black or white.
The TomTom Start² is out now with an RRP of £119.99 for the UK & Ireland version and £139.99 for the Europe version.
