The Last of the CRTs

Today, we set ourselves a challenge worthy of the summer holidays: find a new CRT monitor that's still on sale.  Believe us, it's not going to be easy.  But--strangely--there is still one option.

Here's the model that we managed to find, the ViewSonic E70:

It has the following tech specs:
  • 17'' CRT
  • aspect ratio: 4:3
  • maximum resolution: 1024 x 768 pixels
  • dimensions: 40.4 x 40.6 x 42.5 cm
  • weight: 16.3 kg
  • price: £100
It's pretty hard to get excited about, unless you're looking for a rather original paperweight.  By contrast, for less than £150, you can get a 22'' LCD screen:

Asus VW220TE

  • 22'' LCD
  • aspect ratio: 16:10
  • maximum resolution: 1680 x 1050 pixels
  • dimensions: 51.4 x 40.6 x 21.1 cm
  • weight: 4.4 kg
  • price: £146
It's nothing new, of course: it's almost impossible to compare CRTs and LCDs because the latter have clearly taken over.  As for this Asus VW220, its 1680 x 1050 pixel panel uses TN technology and has a response time of 5 ms.  That means it's probably comparable to the Hyundai N220W which we've tested.
