LaCie has put on sale a new version of its successful Rugged external hard drive. Known as the Safe, this new version has a biometric fingerprint recognition system.

The user is therefore obliged to show their credentials to gain access to the data. They are encrypted on 128 bits by a military standard AES system integrated into the drive. Up to 10 users can be authorised access to Rugged Safe.

It conserves the 2.5 inch format with the same reinforced casing as on the previous generations, as well as USB 2.0 and Firewire. The LaCie Backup software is delivered with the drive. It is compatible with PCs and Macs.

The Rugged Safe is now on sale in its 500 GB version starting at £169. A 1 TB version should soon be on the market at an as yet undisclosed price.
