The GeForce GTX 465 Available for under £300. A Good Deal?

NVIDIA has started slowly rolling out its new DirectX 11 graphics card architecture. After the GTX 480 and 470, the latest model to hit the shops is the GeForce GTX 465, released on 1 June.

Basically, the GeForce GTX 465 is a slightly scaled-down version of the GTX 470. Certain rendering features have been deactivated and frequencies have also been pushed down. In practice, that makes for lower performances than its main rival, the ATI Radeon HD 5850.

What about power consumption?

Given the lower frequencies, power consumption is a little lower in 3D mode. Our mate Stéphane at PCWorld Magazine picked up a power consumption of 326 W when fully configured, which is still higher than the 286 W consumed by the Radeon HD 5850, although slightly lower than the 335 W guzzled by the HD 5870, or the 389 W required to run the GTX 470. When it's not in action, power consumption is identical to the GeForce GTX 470. It's therefore an improvement, but still not as good as an ATI.

The GeForce GTX 465 is currently available for around £260, which is a very similar price to the Radeon HD 5850. As you can now pick up one of NVIDIA's new cards for under £300, the firm's home-grown technologies like 3D Vision, PhysX and CUDA are starting to become more accessible.

We haven't managed to get hold of a GeForce GTX 465 to test yet, but as soon as the manufacturer is kind enough to lend us one then we'll get to work straight away. In the meantime, Engadget.com has links to a selection of online reviews.
