After first unveiling the Xperia Tablet Z a few weeks ago in Japan, Sony made the official European launch presentation today at MWC, including the UK price and release period. The Xperia Tablet Z boasts a 10.1-inch Full HD display, Android 4.1, a quad-core processor, a waterproof body and an Exmor R camera sensor.

After an umpteenth presentation of the Xperia Z smartphone, Sony (partially) surprised the press today at the opening of the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona by officially outing the Xperia Tablet Z for Europe.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z

Strictly adhering to the visual style of the Xperia Z, this Android 4.1 tablet has a 10.1-inch IPS display with just-over-Full HD resolution (1920 x 1200 pixels), a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. It comes in a choice of 16 GB or 32 GB, both of which are expandable via microSD.

Sony Xperia Tablet Z

Presented as 'the world's thinnest tablet', the Xperia Tablet Z is indeed astonishingly thin with a record (well, for now) 6.9 mm body that weighs 495 grammes. Somehow, Sony was able to find space for an 8-Megapixel Exmor R camera sensor (technology Sony originally developed for its digital cameras) that films in Full HD 1080p. There's also a 2.2-Megapixel webcam on the front.

Like the Xperia Z smartphone, the Xperia Tablet Z has a "Stamina" battery (6,000 mAh) that provides longer battery life than ordinary batteries, in part by improving the battery's handling of standby mode. The tablet is waterproof (IP55/57). Let's just hope Sony takes better care of its manufacturing process than it did with the Xperia Tablet S, on which the company had to suspend production due to leaks in the 'waterproof' body.

For wireless connectivity the Xperia Tablet Z has Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0 and NFC. Like the other Xperia tablets, it also has an infrared port to allow the slate to double as a smart universal remote control.

The Sony Xperia Tablet Z will hit stores in the second quarter of 2013, at £399 for the Wi-Fi-only version and £499 for the 4G/LTE version.
