After what seems like an eternity of technological dilly-dallying, Google has finally unveiled its touchscreen tablet. As expected, the Nexus 7 was designed by Asus and carries an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. The price: $199.
The Nexus 7 officially came to life at last night's Google I/O conference. The 7-inch tablet runs on... well, Android, of course—the coming 4.1 Jelly Bean. The touchscreen has 1280 x 800 pixels, which is the standard resolution on all 10.1-inch Android tablets launched since last year.
Behind the IPS display is a 1.2 GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 T30L quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, a choice of 8 or 16 GB of storage space and an NFC chip. In addition to the NFC feature for instant data sharing between devices, Google will surely be pushing Wallet, its new mobile payment system, as far as it can go. It has a front-facing 1.2-Megapixel camera, but Google apparently decided to forgo the rear-facing camera. The firm is advertising a battery life of 8 to 9 hours of HD video playback and a MicroUSB port as the primary connector. Basically, Google is continuing its recent drive towards closed memory with no microSD slot.
Looking almost like a line-for-line copy of the Asus M370T, which stores stopped carrying a few months ago, the Nexus 7 weighs 340 grammes and has Bluetooth 3.0 and Wi-Fi b/g/n.
The Google Nexus 7 will go on sale in mid-July, but it is already available for pre-order in the UK, the US, Canada and Australia at the recommended price of 199 USD for the 8 GB version and 249 USD for the 16 GB. The tablet comes with a $25 credit redeemable on Google Play, which now offers games and videos for both rental and purchase.
With the Nexus 7 Google is clearly taking a swipe at Amazon's Kindle Fire, another tablet in the same price range that also focuses on multiple content consumption.
