After having withdrawn its Streak 5 tablet, Dell's Streak 7 is currently flying the flag for the American IT firm in the tablet market. However, it now seems that its days could be numbered. With so many very similar tablets out there, could the Streak 7 be the latest victim to succumb to the inevitable cull?

Dell hasn't officially announced that it'll be ceasing production or sale of the Streak 7, launched back in January at the CES tech show in Las Vegas. However, Dell's recent activity could suggest that the tablet, which failed to impress both the public and the specialist press, could be on its way out. In fact, the 7-inch Streak tablet is no longer available on Dell's US website, as the product has been withdrawn from the US market. According to The Inquirer, Dell may even have halted production of its Streak 7 altogether.

The Dell Streak 7 was designed to replace the Streak 5, a product that was too small to be a tablet by today's standards and too big to be a smartphone. The Streak 7 has a 1 GHz Tegra 2 processor, 32 GHz of memory and runs on Android 2.2 Froyo.

On its US website, Dell offers links to a selection of 'similar' products, which are essentially smartphones or the Inspiron Duo—a hybrid device somewhere between a tablet and a netbook. For the moment then, Dell has no alternative tablet to propose. Note that the Dell Streak 7 is still available to buy on Dell's UK website, although for how long is anyone's guess.

Dell, it seems, could be hatching plans to release a new tablet loaded with an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. In fact, on the Nvidia website, Dell is listed as one of several manufacturers that uses the firm's Tegra 3 processor in a 'Super Tablet'. That's almost certainly no coincidence.

If, as the evidence suggests, the Dell Streak 7 could soon be discontinued, then retailers will no doubt start cutting prices. In fact, some sites have already discounted the Streak and are out of stock. If you do decide to invest, then note that Dell hasn't turned its back on the Streak's faithful customers, as the Streak 7 can be updated to the Android 3.2 Honeycomb OS.
