The Archos GamePad is an Android tablet with a set of integrated controls that effectively turn it into a portable console. Archos brought its GamePad along to our "La Factory" tech show last week in Paris, so we naturally took a closer look.

The 7" GamePad has a TN screen and runs on a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB of RAM and the Android 4.0 ICS operating system. Physical buttons on either side of the screen turn this tablet into a mean machine for portable Android-based gaming.

The GamePad has an HDMI out, a micro USB port and a microSD memory card slot. The European retail price has been announced at €150 (approx. £125) and it's due to launch in November. A selection of games from the Google Play Store are apparently due to come pre-loaded.

Hands-On Video

Although the GamePad is made from plastic, the finish is pretty good. The controls are all easy to use, although we would have preferred to see the analogue sticks positioned a few millimetres higher. It'll be interesting to see how the GamePad feels after longer gaming sessions. The trigger buttons fall nicely under your fingers and all the controls are responsive. What's more, each button's function can be user-configured in the internal menu of the game you're playing.
