Although Apple hadn't officially announced what was due to be presented at its press event yesterday, there was  little doubt that we'd be seeing an iPad Mini. In the end, though, we saw a whole lot more than that, with a new 13" MacBook Pro with Retina display, a new iMac, a new iPad with Retina display, a Mac Mini and, of course, the 7.9" iPad Mini.

The table below shows UK prices for the iPad Mini, the iPad 2 and the iPad with Retina display.

The "new" third-generation iPad launched back in March seems to have completely disappeared from Apple's list of tablets! The iPad 2, however, is still hanging on in there.

The iPad Mini will be available to pre-order from Friday 26 October with deliveries and in-store sales of the Wi-Fi models due to start on 2 November. Wi-Fi + Cellular models will follow in late November and boast 3G dual carrier connectivity (42 Mbps maximum). UPDATE 25/10/2012: EE has announced that the iPad Mini and iPad 4 will work on its 4G network in the UK.

The iPad Mini will be available in black or white. Rumours of rainbow colours therefore turned out to be hot air this time. Apple has, nevertheless, developed a Smart Cover accessory for the new 7.9" tablet, as already seen with full-sized iPads (a magnetic clip-on cover that doubles up as a stand).

Battery life for the iPad Mini is announced at 10 hours and this Mini tablet is still using Apple's Lighting connector. It runs on an A5 processor and has a 5-Megapixel camera, which ultimately makes the iPad Mini a smaller version of the iPad 2 with a few features inherited from the third-gen iPad launched back in the spring. Note that a 4G LTE version is in the pipeline.

Apple also seems to have understood that many users don't like having thick black borders around their tablet screens. Two out of four of them have therefore been drastically slimmed down.

Nexus vs ipad mini

Apple is clearly lining up the iPad Mini to rival Google's Nexus 7 (made by Asus). The firm has finally found a competitor, it seems. But in a casing roughly the same size and weight as the average 7" Android tablet, Apple has packed in a 7.9" display, giving users 35% more screen surface area.

The iPad Mini is a slim tablet, at just 7.2 mm thick, and its finish resembles the iPhone 5 when you see the new tablet up close. The 7.9" screen has the same 1024 x 768-pixel definition as the iPad 2. However, there's no sign of a Retina display here.

The fourth-generation full-sized iPad with Retina display also boasts a 10-hour battery life, but it runs on an A6X processor that's twice as powerful as the A5X seen in the last iPad

So less than six months after releasing the third-gen iPad with Retina display, Apple is back with a fourth-generation model.

With iBooks TextBooks, Apple and its iPad have managed to win over schools and educational establishments across the US. Are there no limits to this tablets success?

Tim Cook reckons the iPad is so successful because "People love their iPads. They love the big multi-touch display, they love that they can connect anywhere they go, they love iPad’s legendary all day battery life. And they love all the amazing apps that have been optimized for iPad."

For the new iMac, Apple has come up with a fresh take on hybrid storage called "Fusion drive".

This hybrid drive has 128 GB of flash storage and 1 to 3 TB of HDD storage. The SSD will be used for system files and applications, while the HDD memory will store the rest of the data. Importing photos is said to be three times faster as a result.

The new iMac is 80% slimmer and screen reflections have apparently been reduced by 75%.

Presenting the new iMac, Apple displayed an evolution chart showing just how much the firm's all-in-one computer has changed since the original model landed in 1998. The latest model is slimmer, borderless and very easy on the eyes. Indeed, Tim Cook was keen to remind us that the "iMac is the best all-in-one computer in the industry".

Apple has slimmed down the iMac by 80%, making a sleek new model that's just 5 mm thick.

It uses an IPS screen, as is usually the case with Apple products, and will be available in two different sizes:
  • 1920 x 1080 pixels,  21.5" - starting from £1,099, coming in November
  • 2560 x 1440 pixels, 27" - starting from £1,499, coming in December

Apple claims to calibrate the screens one by one, and has apparently reduced screen reflections by 75%!

The new iMacs will come with Intel i5 and i7 processors, up to 3 TB of storage, four USB 3 ports, an SD card slot and two Thunderbolt connections.

New Mac Mini: From £499

A new Mac Mini was also announced, starting at £499 in the UK. It comes with an Intel Core i5 processor, 4 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of storage.

Tim Cook then went on to announce a 13" MacBook Pro with a Retina display and no less than 2560 x 1600 pixels. Storage can be upped to 768 GB and UK prices start at £1,449.

And, as usual, Tim Cook treated us to a whole load of facts and figures about Apple products. Here are just a few of them:
  • 5 million iPhone 5 mobiles were sold in the handset's first weekend on the market
  • 3 million new iPods have been sold
  • 200 million devices are now running iOS6
  • Between April and July 2012, 83 million people visited an Apple Store
