Who said netbooks were no good for gaming? Admittedly, models capable of handling new-gen video games are few and far between as netbooks usually lack graphics components with decent 3D capabilities. However, the NVIDIA ION GPU could be set to change all that, as the second generation of this graphics chip could well bring gaming to the netbook.
The video below shows the new Asus Eee PC 1215N top-of-the-range netbook running Blizzard's recently released blockbuster StarCraft 2!
Although the game doesn't exactly flow smoothly and seamlessly (20-ish frames per second at best with minimal graphic detail), StarCraft 2 is still playable. That's a pretty promising sign for less power-hungry games.
The Asus Eee PC 1215N has the Intel Atom D525 dual-core processor, 2 GB of RAM and the NVIDIA ION graphics processor (second generation with 16 CUDA processing units and Optimus technology).
This new 12.1-inch top-end netbook is due for release in September with a suggested retail price of £450. It should prove a worthy successor for the Asus Eee PC 1201N, which got five stars in our product review.
