After a year of loyal service, the Samsung SSD 830 is moving aside for its successor. Or shall we say, successors: the 840 and 840 Pro.

Like their older brother, the 840 and 840 Pro both have a Samsung controller based on three ARM9 cores. The clock frequencies have been boosted from 220 to 300 MHz.

The 840 has TLC memory chips and the 840 Pro has MLC chips, which are supposedly faster and more resilient. To bridge the gap, the 840 uses a process called "over-provisioning" in which a portion of the storage capacity is used to maintain the drive's performance over time and increase its endurance.

The 840 Pro will come in a choice of 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB and the "standard" 840 will come in 120 GB, 250 GB and 500 GB.

And here are the prices. The 840 series: $110 (120 GB), $200 (250 GB) and $450 (500 GB). The 840 Pro: $150 (128 GB), $270 (256 GB) and $600 (512 GB).

Both drives are set for an October release. For $20 extra, you can also get an update kit with a USB-to-SATA adapter and cloning software to help you replace your hard disk with the SSD.
