Sony TVs for 2010: Presence, Essential

After a quick look at the technology Sony is planning to include in its collection of TVs for 2010 earlier, here are the first two new collections: Presence and Essential.

Here's how Sony is pitching Presence: 'The PRESENCE range is designed to enhance contemporary living with elegant design and connection to a huge choice of entertainment experiences. TVs in the PRESENCE RANGE look effortlessly graceful on the outside but are packed with the latest innovations for easy access to a world of entertainment.'

Presence Bravia NX800

This is an example of Sony's new 'monolithic' design which puts the emphasis on a stylish design.  The glass and brushed aluminium stand can tilt the screen up to 6°.  In technical terms, Motionflow 200 Hz is there, but there isn't any 3D.  The Deep Black technology relies on LEDs around the edge of the display.  Online content is available either via a LAN port or built-in WIFi.


The NX800 will be available in March 2010 in 40'' and 52'' versions.  There will also be a more affordable NX700 range, but we don't yet know what the specs are or what sizes will be available.  A return to fluorescent tubes instead of LEDs for backlighting wouldn't be at all surprising.

Sony has the following to say about the Essential range: 'a superb High Definition experience for everyone. It brings together top technologies and outstanding performance into one great entertainment experience. TVs in the ESSENTIAL range have stylish design, eco-features, excellent picture quality and include models with built-in entertainment features such as integrated Blu-ray Disc™ or DVD Players and easy access to digital TV.'

ESSENTIAL Bravia EX700

The EX700 will also have LED backlighting around the edges, but comes in a much more traditional frame.  Motionflow is capped at 100 Hz, but all the online services are there, again over Ethernet or WiFi.

It will be available form March 2010 in 32'', 40'', 46'', 52'' and 60'' versions.  Other ranges to be announced at different prices points include the EX500, EX4020 and EX302.  We imagine that the list will include models with and without Motionflow, with and without WiFi, with different backlighting systems and so on …
