With its first 3D TVs round the corner, and news about firmware updates to make the PS3 3D compatible, it's no surprise that Sony has just announced two 3D Blu-ray disc players.

The BDP-S470 will only be able to play Blu-ray 3D discs after a firmware update of it own, leaving it to the consumer to take the final step, for early adopters at least.  Apart from that, it's a fairly standard offering, with a good solid features list:

  • Blu-ray 3D ready
  • Entertainment Database Browser with Gracenote technology
  • Bravia Internet Video online services
  • Wired networking as standard and optional wireless via a USB dongle
  • Will be DLNA compatible after firmware update
  • BD Live (built-in memory, so need for a USB key)
  • Dolby TrueHD and dts-HD Master Audio decoding
  • Support for AVCHD, MKV and DivX HD video via the USB port
The BDP-S570 will have the same basic specs, but won't need any firmware update to support 3D: it will be able to play Blu-ray 3D discs straight out of the box.  It also gets built-in WiFi and a chip to reduce the noise in video streamed over the Internet.
