Just a few months after a similar decision from Samsung, Sony Ericsson has announced that it too will be leaving Symbian behind in favour of Android and Windows Phone 7.

The Japanese/Swedish joint venture was a big part of the Symbian foundation, but it looks set to turn its back on what is still the biggest OS in the market.  No Symbian smartphones are planned by the firm for the coming months, according to revelations from one of its directors.

Developers' Choice

The manufacturer has been investing heavily in Android, and it should have handsets running Windows Phone 7 soon enough, especially given that it produced mobiles with earlier versions of Windows Mobile.

It's increasingly clear that Symbian is no longer popular with the big names in the mobile arena.  Nokia announced in the spring that its high-end phones will 'soon' (when?) run MeeGo.  Despite a facelift, Symbian ^ 3, which added a more attractive user interface, the ageing OS hasn't managed to compete with more fashionable options, which are also preferred by mobile app developers.
