Only a year ago, Sony unveiled a range of three budget SLRs with sensors ranging from 10 to 14.2 Megapixels, and with focusing systems ranging from the optical viewfinder to the LCD screen. All three were sold with no kit lens included. Last week, however, Sony announced the upcoming launch of the Alpha A290 and A390, destined to replace its current A230 and A380 models.
There's nothing revolutionary in these new cameras, and it looks like they've simply been updated to bring them in line with the latest technological developments. For example, the 10-Megapixel APS-C sensor has been replaced with a 14.2-Megapixel version, and you'll also now find a deep-set handle to help you grip the cameras more easily (you may remember that previous models had adopted a more compact and 'stylish' design which actually made them less comfortable to hold). The Alpha A290 and A390 will feature some of Sony's home-grown technology too, such as the integrated stabilisation system (compatible with all lenses), a dust-removal system, a 9-point autofocus, 40-segment light metering and a Dynamic Ranger Optimizer. Plus, there's still a selection of storage options, with SD/SDHC and Memory Stick to choose from, and both models have an HDMI output. The main differences between the A290 and the A390 are the latter's a flip-out screen and fast phase-detection autofocus.

Both models are strictly photo only, and we'll probably have to wait for the brand to totally overhaul its SLR range later in the year to see finally see a video function on a Sony SLR. The interface hasn't changed much since the previous entry-level models, and is fairly basic but does have an on-screen help facility to help make handling easier for beginners.
Official UK pricing is yet to be confirmed, but the A290 has been announced at $500 (approx. £350) in the US, and that's including an 18-55 mm kit lens. If the price stays at around that level then you should certainly be able to pick up this SLR and lens in the UK for under £500, which is a real bargain.
The A290 will also be available with two kit lenses (18-55mm and 55-200mm) for a slightly higher price.
The Alpha A390 has been announced with a provisional suggested retail price of $600 (approx. £410) in the US.
Both models are due for release this summer.
