After surpassing Nokia in total value of mobile phone sales in the first quarter of 2011, Apple has now also posted higher volumes in the second quarter.

Nokia and Apple meet up again on the mobiles market, one going up and the other down. Nokia, world leader on borrowed time and still lacking strong products in the smartphone segment, is under attack on all sides from competitors who have been riding the smartphone wave for some time already.

For the second quarter of 2011, Apple recorded a higher sales number than Nokia in the smartphone segment, with 20.3 million terminals sold against 16.7 million for Nokia, a considerable drop of 30% in sales over the period for the Finish company. This sales deficit is also showing in Nokia's accounts with a projected loss of EUR 487 million (GBP 430 million) and an 11% fall in annual turnover.
What with a blind insistence on continuing with Symbian (Nokia N8 Anna, for example) until recently and unconvincing high end products, this news was only a matter of time in coming.

The release of the first Windows Phone 7 Nokia smartphones may well give the company some breathing space but users are still to be convinced that the Microsoft OS is the best solution for them. With a market share of just 6% projected for 2011, WinPho7 is still struggling to make any impact in a world where it must co-exist with Android, iOS and even Bada.
