Skype is back in the App Store in a new and improved version that's finally been tailored to use on Apple's iPad and iPad 2.

Until today, using Skype on Apple's touchscreen tablet always felt a bit makeshift, a bit slap-dash, as the app was primarily designed for use with the iPhone. As a result, the image was blown up to twice its rightful size and just wasn't at home on the 9.7-inch screen of the iPad 2.

Today, Skype for iPad has finally arrived in the App Store, allowing free voice and video calls over Wi-Fi or 3G in an environment that's been specifically designed for the iPad. Skype did actually briefly out this app on Monday, but then pulled it from the App Store a few minutes later without explanation. However, it now seems to be back for good.

Improvements include easily and clearly visible onscreen contacts, a sharper image tailored to the screen size and the ability to use instant messaging during a call—you can even send emoticons!
