Shots of a forthcoming 30-inch from Dell: the U3011

PCPOP have recently published the first photos of the Dell UltraSharp U3011, the forthcoming replacement for the 3008WFP-HC. The 3008WFP-HC's retirement is well earned after more than two years of faithful service.

Although the pictures in question only give snippets of information on the tech spec of the new 30-inch screen, note the presence of a sheet not unknown to us, as the same one is delivered with the U2410. It consists, in fact, of various reports on the colours in sRGB and Adobe RGB. As well as giving a nice glimpse of what the colours are like, this information also guarantees that the colours will be pretty faithful as the average deltaE must be lower than 5.0 to respect these standards.

For the rest we can only fall back on some speculation based on experience.

The first concerns the panel technology used. It would indeed be astonishing if Dell had gone for anything other than an IPS as the rest of the UltraSharp range is equipped with this type of panel.

The second is its resolution. 30-inch screens are not limited to 1920 x 1080 pixels, nor even 1920 x 1200, but generally extend to 2560 x 1600. This is why they always need to be linked via a DVI Dual Link socket (the one with all the pins), without which native resolution will be cut down. Here again, there's no reason things should be any different for this monitor.

Our third piece of educated guesswork: the design. Based on what we generally get from Dell when it comes to design and build, it's unlikely that the screen won't be impressive here, or at least not lacking anything important.

Several questions remain however: price, response time and availability. Lets hope that Dell will soon fill in the blanks now that the release is no longer a secret.
