Seagate Momentus XT: the 1st hybrid SSD!

There it is ... in my sweaty palm! The Seagate Momentus XT, the first hybrid SSD drive to combine flash memory with the traditional hard drive, has just arrived in the lab.

As we said in our announcement news, this technology is supposed to combine the best of two worlds: SSD performance and hard drive storage capacity. And indeed, the Momentus XT comes in 250 GB, 320 GB and 500 GB versions. It's the 500 GB we have in the lab, which costs around the £120 mark, while an SSD of equivalent capacity would cost an arm and a leg, or around £1500 at current prices.
Will it also give decent performances? Answers next week.
