Towards a photo-realistic display

PhotoReal is Garmin's new technology aimed at improving the realism of the display of road signs. Garmin has actually photographed the signs to display them as they are in reality.

Sure, they're realistic, but we didn't necessarily find them a great deal easier to recognise. The sat nav displays the photo in the background while the sign showing you which direction to take is in the foreground in a lighter colour. The arrows which indicate which lane to join (Lane Assist) are of course still there.

Original photo.

Use of the photo in PhotoReal.

While it works fine, this feature seems by no means indispensable to us. Perhaps a step towards generalised photo-realism? This is something Navigon are already doing, representing certain towns in 3D. Maybe this presages a future move towards augmented reality technology.

The Garmin nüvi 2460LT is identical to the Garmin nüvi 2360LT that we have tested, with just one difference: a larger 5 inch display!

Hardware: invasion of the cables!

Handling: simple, well designed menus

Navigation: standard and effective

Extra features: hands-free Bluetooth and ecoRoutes

Offering pleasant handling and usage, the Garmin nüvi 2460LT has a nice 5 inch screen. Very standard, it nevertheless suffers from a few annoying faults (see the "Minuses").
